Our newest full stack developer is full steam ahead - welcome aboard Dan! An experienced engineer who isn’t afraid of a little data analysis, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the team. In short, he’s an expert in all things UX. We had a few minutes to sit down with him, so let’s get to know him together!
What excites you most about joining CommerceBear?
One of the main things that got me excited about CommerceBear was the people. I could tell from initial conversations that the company has a great group of people who would be fantastic to work with!
Plus, the product and vision were very appealing. We have seen a massive shift over the last several years in terms of online shopping, and to be at the forefront of this in the furniture space is super exciting.
What drew you to the world of engineering?
I have always liked computers, so I decided to take an Introduction to Programming class in high school, where I learned how to program in Java. From there, it was the combination of an amazing teacher who pushed me, and the fact that I love building things to solve real-world problems that encouraged me to pursue this career path. Everything started to make sense at that point, and that same teacher encouraged me to apply to university for Computer Science. The rest is history!
How do you approach writing code?
It depends on the project at hand, but what I think is imperative is understanding the core problem in its entirety. I’ll ask questions and take notes, then start with a prototype. With existing projects, I’ll spend some time looking through the codebase for similar things that I can use as examples before starting on something new. Lastly, tests are always super important, and I like to automate tasks with pipelines where possible.
What’s your ecommerce marketplace of choice?
Amazon is definitely the one I use most often, but Wayfair and Overstock are definitely my go-to when it comes to furniture.
What’s your favourite piece of furniture?
Hands down, the best furniture purchase ever, is the Cloud Couch from Sunday’s Furniture. It’s giant (12 feet long!!), comes with a ton of pillows, and is by far the most comfortable couch I have ever sat on, a great addition to the living room. A close second, however, is my concrete dining table from Wayfair!
What’s your go-to downtime activity?
I enjoy playing and making music with friends and have recently gotten into recording and mixing music. I love food as well, and enjoy going out to eat, as well as cooking. I also try to travel twice a year to unplug with no screen time and relax in the sun.
You’re music to our ears. Welcome to the team!
